Manitou Springs' Carnivale Brings a
Unique Twist to Mardi Gras

More laid back than New Orleans, more casual than Venice and more clothed than Rio, Mardi Gras in Manitou Springs is like the town itself: eclectic, eccentric and...different. A foot parade with giant puppets, a corps of Djembe drummers and a snowstorm-or-shine attitude, "Carnivale" is truly Manitou's own. Saturday, February 21, the 17th Annual Carnivale celebration kicks off with the Mumbo Jumbo Gumbo Cookoff at 11 a.m. at Soda Springs Park.

Sponsored by the Business Improvement District and Coors, the parade takes place in downtown Manitou at 1 p.m. following the cook-off. This year's theme is "Indulge Your Appetites".

Revelers are invited to come early and enjoy specials in the downtown restaurants as well as live music venues after the parade. The free lift ticket promotion for Monarch is still valid, so be sure to save $75 in receipts to redeem at the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce. As always, Carnivale attendees are encouraged to indulge their appetites responsibly.

This year the parade them is
INDULGE YOUR APPETITES!

The rules for the Parade continue to be few and sensible. Those wishing to march, singly or in groups, need only show up in Memorial Park before 12:30 p.m. in costume. Musical instruments are welcome, as are bands and human and animal powered floats. No motorized vehicles are allowed and participants are cautioned that any illegal activities will result in a citation from the Manitou police.

Open containers of alcohol are against the law. The Parade is family-friendly.

All are invited, just dress up and show up at Memorial Park by 12:30 p.m. the day of the Parade.

Those wishing to inquire about volunteer opportunities for Carnivale should call 685-9127.

The Mumbo Jumbo Gumbo Cook-Off will once again precede the Parade and will be held in Soda Springs Park, with public tastings - two for a buck - beginning at 11 a.m. For Gumbo Cook-Off information and rules, call the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce, 685-5089.
For Carnivale information, call 685-9127 or write to Carnivale, P.O. Box 847, Manitou Springs, CO 80829.
